The Genius Of Earl Sweatshirt
Earl emerged onto the music scene as an underdog with the blooming Odd future collective in 2011. Today he is one of the most respected figures in underground hip hop, so how did the ignorant 16 year old accessorised to Tyler the Creator’s antics make his way up in the music industry? Earl began gaining traction with the self titled debut mixtape EARL released under the odd future collective, EARL being one of three mixtapes that catapulted the group into mainstream success. With the newfound success of Odd Future Earl tended to find himself in consistent trouble, this prompted the rappers mother to send him to a school for troubled youths in Samoa, although social media adopted a viral #freeearl trend during his time away at the peak of Odd Future’s success Earl would later go on record to say that Samoa helped him focus on his music and mature as an artist. More elegantly representative of this though would be Earl’s official debut album “DORIS”, which dealt with concepts such as fleeting youth and his father’s absence when he was younger. Earls next project fully embraced the darker tonality that DORIS only dabbled in, with all the production shouldered by Earl himself his aptly titled sophomore album “I don’t like shit, I don’t go outside” is a deep dive into Earls mental state at the time. This album revolves around bleak, minimalistic doom jazz inspired production solely unique to the style of Earl Sweatshirt, the lyrics focus around politics, how fame has affected Earls relationships and how the lack of a complete household in his developing years resulted in how he is now. The incredible thing about Earl although is that he doesn’t just flat out say these things, he incorporates them into abstract lyricism referring to it all in a much more unique and symbolic way. A prime example of top tier lyricism and creativity on Earl’s behalf would be his 2018 project “some rap songs”, in which Earl reaches for a much more minimalistic production scheme, utilizing looped jazz samples and trip-hop effects to create a dark, hopeless and brooding experience of an album. Earl’s lyricism is at its peak here as well, mixing in his vocals to make them feel almost drowned out by the instrumentals, an effect that is intended to mimic the feeling of Earl drowning in his depression after the unexpected death of his father. The lyrics follow Earl as he grieves and reflects on what he could have done differently to foster a relationship with his father before it was too late. This trip – hop jazz loop style has now been adopted by many other artists including the likes of MACH – HOMMY and Mavi. Learn more about Earl Sweatshirt’s genius and influence in the podcast below.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.
Why do this?
The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.
To help you get started, here are a few questions:
You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.
Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.
When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
